A columnist has taken aim at Pippa Middleton after the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnant sister admitted she’s concerned about how her body is changing in her third trimester – and feels worried she could end up breaking in to a “penguin-style waddle”.
In a hilarious opinion piece for The Guardian, writer Barbara Ellen questioned if Pippa actually knows she’s pregnant or “just thinks she’s fat”, and branded her comments on pregnancy weight “tragic”.
It came after Pippa opened up on her strict exercise regimes in her Waitrose Weekend magazine column, revealing she’s now embraced barre-style workouts after giving up on everything from swimming and yoga, to tennis and running, as she wants to ensure that her “old favourite jeans will still fit… eventually”.
Hitting out at the comments, Ellen wrote: “Where does such ‘still got it!’ gestation paranoia come from? As for waddling – what is her problem with being a pregnant woman who looks and acts… pregnant? Same with those ‘old favourite jeans’ – they’re just an item of clothing, not a denim-rebuke.”
Rather than worrying about fitting in to the jeans, Ellen suggested Pippa simply throw them out or bury them in the garden while wearing a black veil, in a farewell ceremony to her “pre-pregnancy hotness”.
It wasn’t all a verbal attack, as Ellen pointed out it is in fact Pippa’s first pregnancy so it’s understandably scary to see her body go through such huge changes.
However, she concluded: “Certainly, it doesn’t seem right for any woman to be striving quite so feverishly to stay in shape during pregnancy – to the point where a child in utero becomes almost reframed as unwanted weight gain.”
She added: “Your body is busy doing something miraculous – who cares if you resemble a walrus in jogging bottoms? If Middleton would only stop trying to exercise her pregnancy into oblivion, maybe she would find she enjoys it a bit more.”
According to the Mail Online, Pippa’s initial comments came as part of a column focusing on her fitness regime in her third trimester.
She reportedly wrote: “I feel far from a ballerina, but I’m equally determined not to break into a penguin-style waddle and plod around with bad posture.”
Pippa is expecting her first child in October with husband James Matthews, but despite looking incredible with her growing bump, she reportedly added in her magazine column that she is now “conscious of holding my tummy in (as if giving your baby a hug) to support my back and ensure that post-baby, my old favourite jeans will still fit… eventually”.
