Royal Mint releases special coins for royal wedding anniversary

Coin collectors rejoice! The Royal Mint has released a special edition collection to mark the Queen and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary and it really is something special.

Both of the beloved royals appear on the coins, with one side featuring the iconic head shots and the other depicting the couple riding on horseback.

There are 10 different versions of the coin, including both gold and silver, and each comes with a different value according to its weight.

While they are sure to excite plenty of royal fans, the coins don’t come cheap.

The most affordable is the Brilliant Uncirculated Coin at £13 ($A22, $US17), while the most expensive, the Five Ounce Gold Proof Coin, will set you back £8450 ($A14,446, $US11,051).

Each coin in emblazoned with the words “Wedding love has joined them in happiness 1947-2017”.

Enthusiastic coin collectors are already buying up big, with some of the most expensive items in the range already running low in stock.

The Queen married Prince Philip in an extravagant ceremony at Westminster Abbey in front of 2,000 guests in 1947.

The service was broadcast live to 200 million radio listeners and thousands of well-wishers lined the streets outside to cheer them on.

Their wedding offered a ray of hope in the post-war error when London, and the rest of the world, were rebuilding after years of destruction.

The Queen, who was simply known as Princess Elizabeth at the time, famously saved ration tokens to buy the material for her dress and did her own makeup on the big day.

The pair are the first royal couple to reach the monumental Platinum anniversary and their love for each other is evident even after all these years.

In her speech on their 50th wedding anniversary, the Queen took her chance to acknowledge Philip’s sacrifice throughout their marriage and his steadfast support of her role.

“He is someone who doesn’t take easily to compliments but he has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know,” she said.
