Robert De Niro has made a beautiful documentary to honour his late father, Robert De Niro Senior who died in 1993 at age 71.

De Niro Senior was an abstract painter who emerged alongside contemporaries including Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, and was a part of the post-Second World War expressionist art movement.

“Remembering the Artist Robert De Niro Sr” screened at the Sundance Film Festival last week, and has since been picked up by HBO.

But Robert De Niro has said that he did it for his fans and family.

“I wanted to make a documentary about my father with footage, whatever footage we had; people, whoever was around that were still with us, (I) wanted to have them interviewed and talk about him and have it for the family, for my kids, the grandkids,” he said. “And then it went this way that HBO picked it up which is really great.”
