Rebecca Gibney speaks out about domestic violence past

Gibney has opened up about her past.

Beloved television actress Rebecca Gibney has spoken out about her violent past in support of fellow actress Melissa George.

Gibney shared her heartfelt story on social media after seeing the backlash George received for talking about her marriage breakdown, which saw her left bloodied and bruised by her husband.

Gibney uploaded a photo of herself as a child with her sister Stella and said she was “disturbed” by the trolling George had been subjected to for speaking out.

“This is a happy snap of my sister Stella and me when we were kids,” she wrote. “No one would know that we were being raised in a family of domestic violence.

“Last night on the Sunday program fellow actor Melissa George talked about being attacked by her former partner… [I] have been really disturbed by the reports of the online response to Melissa’s interview.

“That somehow she deserved what happened to her. As a victim of domestic violence myself – I grew up in a household where violence toward our mother was a common occurrence – I am appalled that anyone can accuse a woman of ‘ asking’ to be beaten.”

Some of the online comments aimed at George appeared to promote her abuse.

“I watched her for 30 minutes and truly wanted to punch her face in too,” one commenter wrote on Facebook.

Gibney has spoken about her childhood in the past, saying she watched her alcoholic father abuse her mother for 15 years.

What are your thoughts on this? Do we need to do more to support victims of domestic abuse?
