Trump to release remaining secret JFK files

US President Donald Trump will release the last of the FBI’s secret files on the assassination of America’s 35th president, John F Kennedy, “subject to the receipt of further information” he wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

While most of the investigative information on Kennedy’s death has been released by the National Archives over the years, a small batch of files remain locked away and Trump is the only one who can authorise their release.

Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened.

Kennedy was shot and killed on November 22, 1963 and his death has captivated the world ever since with movies, books, documentaries and conspiracy theories contesting the circumstances that lead to his untimely demise.

While many have argued his death came at the hands of his own government, there is no conclusive evidence to prove that Kennedy’s killer, Lee Harvey Oswald, acted in consort with anyone else.

Trump’s announcement comes after a number of government agencies requested he hold off on making the documents public, lest they expose relatively recent intelligence and law enforcement operations.

However, the White House released a statement on Saturday saying the president believed the “documents should be made available in the interests of full transparency unless agencies provide a compelling and clear national security or law enforcement justification otherwise,” reports The Washington Post.

While the documents are set to give closure to a monumental moment in American history, Kennedy assassination experts don’t believe they’ll contain any “bombshell” revelations, according to the Post.

The files should put to rest any remaining conspiracy theories around the shocking assassination that have long fuelled rumours of darker forces at play.

Even Trump has accused America of plotting his predecessor’s death, telling Fox News in 2016 that he believed the father of Republican Senator Ted Cruz had consorted with Oswald right before the shooting.
