‘It’s a witch hunt’: Trump furious as first charges filed

Trump frequently uses his social media platform to vent his anger.

Another day, another impromptu press conference held by US president Donald Trump on Twitter. This time, Trump railed against the investigations into his presidential campaign’s potential ties with Russia just one day before the first charges against him are expected to be filed.

Trump and his campaigners have so far denied any wrongdoing, but the investigation has continued for months, and Trump’s anger has only been spurred on by the publication of political rival Hillary Clinton’s new book.

The first indication of an impending Twitter rant came a few days ago, when Trump tweeted a short video from the New York Post. The video included images of an NYP article titled “How Team Hillary played the press for fools on Russia”.

An excerpt from the article was included in the video.

“The irony is, it may have in fact been Hillary who came closer to colluding with the Russians in smearing Trump as a Russian traitor than anything Trump did in trying to beat Hillary. The information in the dossier she bought for millions came from Russian intelligence sources, and her lawyers brokered the deal with a Kremlin-tied lobbyist,” Paul Sperry wrote in the article.

A law firm did confirm last week that “it had hired Washington-based researchers last year to gather damaging information about Mr Trump on numerous subjects—including possible ties to Russia—on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the [Democratic National Committee” according to New York Times article.

Then, on October 29, Trump’s Twitter tirade was unleashed.

“Never seen such Republican ANGER & UNITY as I have concerning the lack of investigation on Clinton made Fake Dossier (now $12,000,000?), the Uranium to Russia deal, the 33,000 plus deleted Emails, the Comey fix and so much more,” [sic] the president wrote on his social media account.

“Instead they look at phony Trump/Russia ‘collusion’, which doesn’t exist. The [Democrats] are using this terrible (and bad for our country) Witch Hunt for evil politics, but the [Republicans] are now fighting back like never before. There is so much GUILT by Democrats/Clinton, and now the facts are pouring out. DO SOMETHING!” [sic] he continued.

Trump finished up his diatribe by suggesting that the investigations, despite continuing for months, are an attempt to undermine the Republican party’s current push for tax cuts.

“All of this ‘Russia’ talk right when the Republicans are making their big push for historic Tax Cuts & Reform. Is this coincidental? NOT!” [sic] Trump wrote.

According to CNN reports, a federal grand jury in Washington has already approved the first lot of charges from the public action by Robert S. Mueller III, the special prosecutor dealing with the Russia investigations. Those affected by the charges could be taken into custody on Monday, local time.

Trump’s mention of “Republican anger and unity” does not seem to be all-inclusive; Republican senator Rob Portman spoke to NBC about the matter and said that Trump had been “too defensive” about the inquiry.

Last week, Trump told reporters that the entire Russia inquiry came about because the Democrats were looking for “an excuse for losing an election”.

“They lost it by a lot. They didn’t know what to say, so they made up the whole Russia hoax,” Trump said.

Do you think Trump is being too defensive about the inquiry? Or does he have a right to lash out?
