Flotus to Clinton: Thank you for defending my son

When it comes to everyday politics, civility isn’t something you see much of of late.

But first lady Melania Trump and Chelsea Clinton have broken away from the steady stream of vitriol between Team Trump and Camp Clinton to unite in a moment of peace.

The two women shared an exchange on Twitter after Clinton scolded a reporter from conservative news website the Daily Caller, who had written a scathing critique of Barron Trump’s clothing.

The reporter wrote that it was time for the president’s son to start “dressing the part” and wearing a shirt, tie and blazer when appearing in public.

Having been criticised for her own appearance while growing up in the White House, Clinton was quite to scold the reporter for attacking the 11-year-old boy.

“Dear Matty-Barron is A KID,” she wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “No child should be talked about in the below manner-in real life or online. And for an adult to do so? For shame.”

Melania responded hours later: “Thank you @ChelseaClinton – so important to support all of our children in being themselves! #StopChildhoodBullying”.

It’s the first social media exchange the women have had since Trump took office after a bitter 2016 election campaign that saw the president brand Clinton’s mother “Crooked Hillary”.

The young Clinton, who is close friends with Ivanka Trump, seems to have put her feelings towards the president aside to stand up against bullying.

While the exchange was a moment of peace it is unlikely to last long with Hillary Clinton’s new book What Happened set for release September 12.

The revealing book details her numerous run-ins with Trump and their infamous exchanges during the three presidential debates.

She recalls how she wanted to say “back up creep” during the second televised debate in which Trump stalked her around the stage and how she dealt with the realisation she had lost the election.
