One Nation candidate under fire over single mum comments

We’re no stranger to reading and hearing some of the controversial opinions of political candidates, especially those representing Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party.

From the candidate who described homosexuality as an illness, to the candidate who thinks the Port Arthur massacre was fabricated, there have certainly been some interesting viewpoints put forward.

Now, another candidate is in hot water – and this time his comments have offended single mums and people on the disability pension.

The ABC reports that David Archibald, One Nation’s candidate for the West Australian seat of Pilbara made the comments in an article in wrote in 2015.

The article highlighted his opinion that there are “lifestyle choices that could be defunded”.

“The first that springs to mind is single motherhood,” he wrote.

“These are women too lazy to attract and hold a mate, undoing the work of possibly 3 million years of evolutionary pressure.

“This will result in a rapid rise in the portion of the population that is lazy and ugly.

“We know what causes pregnancy these days, so everyone who gets pregnant outside of marriage is a volunteer. This is an easy one for defunding.”

Are you on a disability pension?

Well, Archibald wrote that the disability pension and childcare could also be defunded.

“The 800,000 Australians on the disability pension. OK, not all of them. But a good proportion are able to drive cars, bash police and each other, go fishing and so on,” he said.

“Now comes federally funded childcare. This is a lifestyle choice. Looking after children is very labour-intensive.

“If society wishes to encourage childbearing, it should reward that with tax rebates to the childbearing pair and leave it at that.”

He also wrote another article, in which he described the Stolen Generation as a “myth”.

And when the ABC approached him about his comments, he reportedly told them he stood by them.
