Mother of the groom steals attention in floor-length gown

Rules about guest attire have changed over the years, but would you wear this to someone else’s wedding?

Every wedding is different, but there’s a general rule that all guests must follow: don’t try to upstage the bride.

But what happens when the mother of the groom wears a floor-length silver gown?

While browsing through a website, one Mumsnet user stumbled across a review on this dress.

“Bought this for my son’s wedding in Long Island this summer,” the review reads. “The dress is a perfect fit, and perfect length with high heels. The dress is stunning and so comfortable to wear. Friends have all said it is a beautiful dress.”

There’s no denying that the dress is beautiful, but is it really appropriate attire for the mother of the groom?

Whether donning a sun dress or a blouse and skirt, most women wouldn’t dare wear white or even cream to a wedding for fear of looking too ‘bridal’. After all, it’s someone else’s special day and the attention should be on them.

After a link to the review was posted in the Mumsnet forums, commenters were divided on whether or not this was good wedding etiquette.

“It looks like [a] bloody wedding dress,” one person writes. “Of course it’s completely unsuitable.”

Other commenters were quick to point out that the dress had a certain Shirley Bassey flair to it, but said that since the wedding took place in Long Island it was appropriate.

“You need to understand Long Island,” one person writes. “Their weddings are very grand generally – and formal.”

“I think it’s lovely and totally appropriate for an American wedding,” another comment reads.

The person who originally posted a link to the review wasn’t interested in the placating comments.

“I think if you wore that to someone else’s wedding, let alone your adult sons, you would look like a right attention seeking prat,” they wrote back.
