Malcolm Turnbull reduced to tears after meeting sick baby

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has shed a tear during his speech after meeting a sick baby boy at the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick.

An emotional Mr Turnbull toured the hospital where he met an 11-month-old baby in a children’s cancer ward.

The moment moved the PM to tears the reality of the hardship the children and their families face hit home at the end of the day.

“He pressed his little hand up against the glass so that we were touching between the glass and there were tubes coming out of his nose,” Mr Turnbull said.

“In the arms of his mother he smiled.”

He said that while the little boy, Nate, does not yet understand everything that is happening to him, he likes to think all the children in the ward felt cared for and loved.

“I think even at that young age he knew, as all these kids do, that despite the rottenness and unfairness of being sick, they couldn’t be in better hands than here at the Sydney Children’s Hospital,” Mr Turnbull said.

During his speech he announced the Government would be delivering $20 million towards the Zero Childhood Cancer project.

While it’s a change to see the PM showing such a public display of emotion, many have noted it comes at a time when there is a lot of conversation around men’s health and perception around how they behave.

The old saying “real men don’t cry” is being thoroughly rejected now as people begin to understand just how important it is to encourage men to open up and share their emotions.

Suicide rates among men are some of the highest in the country, with many hoping that by getting them to feel comfortable showing emotion they will be more likely to ask for help if they need it.

Some have said that seeing the leader of the country in such an open display can only help the cause.
