Vegemite has been one of Australia’s favourite spreads for over 90 years, with over 22 million jars of the famous toast topper being sold each year.

While it’s not uncommon to find it in pantries, you probably wouldn’t expect to see it in a freezer.

In a move that has sent shockwaves through Aussie homes everywhere, the official Vegemite social media pages have suggested that the thick spread could also be enjoyed as an icy pole for summer.

Yes, you read that right.

Sharing a photo of a brown ice block in front of the Vegemite logo, the pages suggested that the not-so-sweet treat could be made at home.

“Brace yourselves Australia,” they warned.

“VEGEMITE Icy Poles! Discover the recipe here.”

The recipe included other ingredients such as caster sugar, cocoa and honey, suggesting it could be a sweet yet savoury flavour.

The idea of a Vegemite-flavoured icy pole divided the internet, with many being quite vocal in how disgusting they thought it would be.

One person wrote: “I’ll stick to my Vegemite on toast or sandwiches thanks.”

A second person said: “To eat Vegemite you add butter and put a little bit on toast, you do not put it in an ice cream!”

A third comment read: “Vegemite really has some ‘geniuses’ working for them.

Still, some people thought it was a good idea.

One fan said: “Looks like a good time to me.”

Another added: “I want to try these.”

One person even asked: “When will there be Vegemite teabags?”

It’s not the first time Vegemite has tried to reinvent their iconic taste.

in 2009, a cheesy-blend of the spread dubbed ‘iSnack 2.0’ hit shelves, much to the confusion of shoppers.

Cadbury also released a Vegemite version of their chocolate three years ago, with many retailers selling out as Aussies rushed to taste the quirky treat.

They also launched a premium version in October called Vegemite Blend 17.

So far, the icy poles won’t be released in stores, but the recipe can be found on the Vegemite website.

What do you think? Would you eat a Vegemite icy pole?
