‘I’m not proud of America’: Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda attends Netflix hosts the New York premiere of 'Our Souls At Night' at The Museum of Modern Art on September 27, 2017 in New York City.

Jane Fonda is not proud of America. But she is proud of people who continue protest against President Donald Trump.

Fonda appeared in a wide-ranging interview on the BCC’s Hardtalk last week where she was asked if she is proud of her country.

No,” she replied.

“But, I’m proud of the resistance. I’m proud of the people who are turning out in unprecedented numbers and continue over and over and over again to protest what Trump is doing. I’m very proud of them, that core.”

When asked if the grandstanding against Trump by celebrities such as Meryl Streep and Stephen Colbert was effective, Fonda replied that she wasn’t sure given the fact that many of those who voted for Trump were once democrats.

“All I know is — and I say this as a died in the wool democrat — the Democratic Party has failed us,” she said.

“The Clintons failed us and in a way the Obama administration … they’ve all neglected the very people who voted for Trump who used to be the base of the Democratic Party.

“These people are in such pain and they are so angry. Some of them are just white supremacists… they hate… but forget about them, you don’t even talk to them. But there’s a lot of other people who voted for Obama twice and then voted for Trump.

“These are people who’ve had their identities taken away. Their factories that used to pay them a good union wage they used to support their families on, they’re gone … They’re now working in restaurants. They cant make ends meet. They need to feel that people are hearing them.”
