A heroic son has tragically died after rescuing his mother from a house fire.

Police have confirmed that emergency services were called to a house in Rodd Point, Sydney’s Inner West, just before 2.30am on Tuesday, where they discovered the house was “well alight”.

While the adult son managed to save his mother and himself, police believe he then ran back inside the house to try to battle the blaze but suffered fatal injuries. His body was later found inside the home.

NSW Fire and Rescue duty commander Graham Moore told the Daily Telegraph the fire was quite “fierce” and added: “[It’s] extremely sad circumstances for the family. It’s a really timely reminder that once you manage to get yourself out of a fire, whatever you do, don’t go in.”

Meanwhile a NSW Fire and Rescue officer told Seven News the crew used hose lines and breathing apparatus to put out the fire which was “through the roof”, adding: “An elderly occupant had managed to evacuate the premises prior to arrival. Unfortunately the crews then searched for a second occupant, who was discovered some time later [having died inside].”

The mother was later filmed being comforted by emergency services while wrapped in a blanket outside.

Firefighters have continued to battle the blaze throughout the early hours of the morning, and police are now launching an investigation.
