As 2015 draws to a close, we’ve compiled a list of five unusual destinations to visit next year. Each destination boasts a range of pricing options, and is surprisingly suitable for the older traveller. This list includes destinations at home and abroad, so there’s really something for everyone.

1. Doubtful Sound, New Zealand

Traditionally thought of as Milford Sound’s lesser cousin, Doubtful Sound is becoming destination in its own right. In 2015, several cruise operators from Doubtful Sound entered Trip Advisor’s Hall of Fame, making it an accessible and relaxing option for older travellers. Cruising is the perfect way to explore Doubtful Sound, with its stunning natural fiords, waterfalls and coves.

2. The Duoro Line, Portugal

For a magical train that passes rivers and wine country, look no further than The Duoro Line. Beginning at Portugal’s historical Regua Station, this train line follows the Pinhao River, and journeys between colossal rock cliffs and impressive ravines. There are a number of tickets available to suit a range of budgets, so sit back and enjoy the ride.

3. Crystal Rivers, Florida

Florida is America’s friendliest state for people aged over 60. The climate is ideal, people are welcoming and golf is played all-year round. To top that off, you can now swim with manatees in Florida’s pristine Crystal River. A range of options are available for people wanting to meet manatees in their natural environment, and you don’t need to be an expert swimmer either.

4. Arnhem Land, Australia

The Northern Territory is Australia’s quintessential outback, and yet few of us get the opportunity to explore it. A great way to tackle the untamed beauty of Arnhem Land, is through a guided safari tour. Activities vary from billabong cruises, to bird watching and alfresco dining. Arnhem Land also boasts a number of outdoor ecolodges, which makes accommodation more affordable.

5. Lima, Peru

South America is often regarded as a challenging destination, so why not eat your way around it instead? Lima is Peru’s most cosmopolitan city, and it’s great for people who like to travel on foot.
