Elton John’s emotional tribute to George Michael
It seems like the words “paid tribute to” have been typed too often by the Starts at 60 staff. This year has been one of heartbreaking losses which it comes to artists that made their job making our day a bit brighter.
The song Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me is a beautiful ballad that was written by Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin, it was famous covered as a duet by Elton and George Michael in the 90s.
Now the song takes on new meaning as Sir Elton sang it as the opening number of his Las Vegas show as a tribute to his longtime friend. Before singing George Michael’s face was projected up on a screen and Elton wiped a tear from his eye before saying he wished George was there to sing it with him.
Elton went on to say “On Christmas Day, George Michael passed away, which was one of the saddest moments of my career because I’ve known George Michael more or less since the start of Wham! and got to know him very well, played with him, recorded with him”. He added, “It was the most awful news because he was on the road back supposedly to good health.”
He urged people who haven’t listened to Michael’s work to go listen to his “outstanding” music he said, “more than anything as a human being he was one of the kindest, sweetest, most generous people I’ve ever met”. Elton then added, “He gave so much money to so many great causes without telling anybody.”
George Michael was one of a kind and Elton is also one of a kind honouring his fallen friend with a beautiful song.
