Cruise ships won’t go near these island destinations over terrorism fears

Holidaymakers will have to miss out on one stop on their cruise itinerary due to growing fears of a terrorist attack in Bali.

Just days after the Celebrity Solstice bypassed Bali, Royal Caribbean Cruises has announced Radiance of the Seas and Celebrity Millenium will both skip the island too.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has warned Australians not to travel to Bali because of the strong suspicion of an imminent terrorist attack.

Many cruisers on-board are disappointed they will miss out on the planned stop-over, but cruise companies say they will not take the risk.

Royal Caribbean Cruises apologised for the inconvenience to guests in statement.

“Our guests’ vacation time is precious and we did not take these decisions lightly.

“The safety of our guests and crew is always our foremost concern,” read the statement.

“We will continue to monitor the security situation in Indonesia and will notify guests or their travel agents if there are changes to future sailings that visit Indonesia.”

DFAT issued a warning earlier this year urging Australian travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia due to advanced plans for terrorist attacks.

“The travel advice for Indonesia is aimed at assisting Australians to make their own safe travel decisions,” said the spokesman.

“The advice represents the best assessment of the risks – it is kept under constant review and is updated as required.”

Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for an attack earlier this year in Jakarta, when seven people, including five IS attackers, were killed.

The attack put tourists on high alert and has scared many people off visiting the island nation.
