She’s one of the most controversial comedians of the moment and Kathy Griffin has revealed that females don’t always get along in the world of comedy.
Griffin, who infamously posed for photographs with a fake severed head of US president Donald Trump following his election win, admitted that she doesn’t see eye to eye with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Speaking at a recent comedy show at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the 57-year-old said she got into a fight with DeGeneres after comedy legend Joan Rivers died.
According to Page Six, Griffin was good friends with Rivers, who claimed she was always shunned by DeGeneres. Griffin reportedly told the crowd that during the last meal she shared with Rivers, the late comedian admitted rejected by DeGeneres, who thought her comedy was too vulgar.
Griffin explained that she called DeGeneres shortly after Rivers’ death and asked her to do a tribute, but the talk show host refused, explaining there is a difference between being funny and being mean.
Rivers regularly took aim at other celebrities during her career and even hosted Fashion Police on the E! Network where she would give her unique commentary on outfits celebrities were wearing. Some people were offended by her ruthless humour, while others praised it. When DeGeneres refused to do a tribute, Griffin wasn’t happy.
“That f***ing set me off,” she said, according to Page Six. “So we had a fight in which I used inflammatory words like, ‘Look you f***ing untalented hack’. You know when you’re fighting with someone and you can kind of laugh at a point? Yeah, not that day.”
Griffin claimed to contact DeGeneres after the fight, telling her it was like a scene out of the ‘80s series Dynasty. She even suggested she was Alexis Colby and DeGeneres was Krystle Carrington. If you ever watched Dynasty, you’ll recall the two characters were regularly involved in over-the-top catfights.
Griffin had previously detailed her feud with DeGeneres in her book, Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index, where she wrote that she thought the sitcom star hated her. She’s also discussed it on numerous gossip shows including Access Hollywood.
“I don’t want Joan to be labelled as mean because she didn’t have a mean bone in her body,” Griffin said during a 2016 interview.
She also claimed DeGeneres had been mean to her and even had her kicked out of a dressing room at an Emmy Awards show.
