Elton John shares moving tribute to 50-year musical partnership

The superstar is happy to put the spotlight on his musical partner.

You’d be hard-pressed to find of someone who hasn’t heard of Elton John, but his long-time collaborator is usually slightly less visible in the public eye.

John took to Instagram to pen a heart-warming post celebrating his relationship with Bernie Taupin, who has been crafting lyrics for the singer and composer for the past 50 years.

“This year has seen many magical moments, among them 50 years with my wonderful friend and collaborator, Bernie Taupin,” the English composer wrote on his social media platform, which is followed by more than 685,000 people.

The pair met in 1967 after answering an ad for British magazine New Musical Express. Back then, Elton John (still known by his birth name, Reginald Dwight) composed music for Taupin’s lyrics in what would become their first joint venture: “Scarecrow”.

Over the next half-century, the pair collaborated on more than 30 albums, creating hits that include “Bennie and the Jets”, “Tiny Dancer”, “Crocodile Rock”, “I’m Still Standing”, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, and “Your Song”.

They may not have worked together on every single track, but there’s no denying that many of John’s most popular songs have been blessed by the Taupin touch.

Perhaps one of their most famous collaborations is “Candle in the Wind”, which was performed as a tribute to the Diana, Princess of Wales. The song was so popular that, in 2007, it was named the “biggest-selling single since records began” in Guinness Book of Records.

In the sweet Instagram post, John shared a link to a special YouTube playlist honouring his partnership with Taupin. A combination of interviews and official music videos, the playlist is a tribute to a lifelong friendship and partnership that took two English lads from obscurity to superstardom.
