He was one of the biggest stars of his era and now ‘American Pie’ singer Don McLean has teamed up with British crooner Ed Sheeran for one of the best duets you’ll see today.
The 72-year-old joined Sheeran over the weekend to surprise audiences at a UCLA Health and Teen Cancer America concert with a performance of one of his most popular hits, ‘Vincent’. In footage McLean has now shared on Twitter, fans were given a rare glimpse of the two musicians rehearsing backstage before the big show.
“Ed & I rehearsing Vincent for the big show,” the ‘And I Love You So’ singer said on Twitter. “Ed is a quick study…turned out great.”
In the clip, Sheeran could be seen strumming his guitar as he sang the iconic track. The pair then took it in turns to sing verses of the song.
Following the performance, McLean gushed about how thrilled he was to perform with the 27-year-old artist and other singers at the event.
“Tonight I had the honour of performing with 3 of my favourite artists,” he wrote. “Roger Daltrey, Ed Sheeran, and Van Morrison. They are the finest artists and the finest people I have met in this business.”
And for fans who were wondering how the stage performance turned out, McLean also retweeted footage of himself and Sheeran rocking out on stage together.
Earlier this year, McLean spoke to Starts at 60 and explained that even at the age of 72, slowing down isn’t an option for him.
“There’s a lot of effort on the part of the world to tell you to pack it in, stay on the porch in a rocking chair, don’t do that,” he said of the view of older people. “Well, I say do it – in fact, do more now because you’ve got less time.”
The singer has continued to perform to sell-out crowds, tour the world and even released another album this year.
“I love it, I love doing what I do and I thank God I can still do what I love to do, how many 72-year-olds are looking at a world tour for the next two years?” he said. “A lot of people are drooling somewhere from home, and I’m rocking! Me and Mick Jagger are still out there!”
