An expert reveals how often you should be washing your pillow

Are you washing your pillow often enough?

Most of us probably consider ourselves to be pretty clean.

We vacuum the floor, wipe down the kitchen bench, shower daily, and change the sheets on the bed regularly.

But as it turns out, you might not be washing your bedding as often as you should be.

That is, according to home cleaning whizz Shannon Lush, who told News Corp that pillow cases and pillows need to be washed more often than most people realise.

“If you’re showering once a day, you can wash your sheets weekly,” Lush told news.com.au.

“However, pillowcases should be changed every second day without fail. It’s against your face, and your hair holds more dirt than anywhere else on the body. It’s like a mop.”

Changing pillow cases every second day? That’s a revelation in itself. But wait until you hear how often the pillows themselves should be washed.

“Most people don’t wash their pillows enough, and it’s really vile,” Lush said, advising that people really should be washing their pillows and doonas once a month.

“It collects old skin cells, which we shed especially when we are asleep. The pillow is a major cause of blackheads.

“Human skin is protein, and lots of nasties live in protein. If you don’t use protectors, that will go in to the bedding. And you wouldn’t leave a steak in the middle of the bed, would you?”

Safe to say, we had no idea and we’re feeling a bit dirty now.

Does this come as a surprise for you, or are you ahead of the cleaning curve?
