Sun, sand and adventure – that’s what Fraser Island offers its thousands of guests each year. The Queensland World Heritage-listed island is a popular holiday destination for people of all ages, from families looking for a nice getaway together, to friends wanting to escape home life and have some fun or solo adventurers who prefer exploring alone.

Located 360 kilometres from Brisbane and just a short 40 minute boat ride from the beautiful Hervey Bay, Fraser Island offers gorgeous beaches, with soft white sand and crystal clear waters. Then there’s the creeks and lakes where you can take a refreshing dip and lush rainforests to venture through.

Lake McKenzie is a popular destination on the island, and has often been referred to as one of the most visited natural wonders in Australia. The gorgeous turquoise waters are the main talking point, and once you visit, you’ll know why, with the colours glistening in the sunlight. Most people choose to visit the tranquil spot by 4WD, but there’s the option to venture there by foot as part of a hike.

The island is also home to dingoes, which are often spotted casually strolling down the beach, and if you’re there at the right time you might even spot some humpback whales frolicking in the waters.

As for where to stay, well you’ll be spoilt for choice with options to camp, stay in a cabin or relax in resort-style accommodation.

But, if you want all the hard work of planning a holiday taken away, then you can’t go past joining an organised group tour. Travel at 60 has a number of fantastic community trips dedicated for over-60s travellers, including holidays to Fraser Island.

You could spend four nights soaking up the sunshine in Queensland on a value-packed holiday, which includes a return journey from Brisbane to Maryborough on the Tilt Train, resort accommodation on Fraser Island with daily breakfast and two group dinners, plus an array of activities.

You’ll enjoy a ranger guided bush tucker walk and a Sea Explorer marine wildlife cruise, plus have some all important down time to take a dip in the ocean or relax on the beach.

Alternatively, you could meet new friends on an all-inclusive Christmas holiday to the sunny island. The holiday package includes a four-night stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort, buffet breakfasts, a ranger guided walk, a 4WD island tour, and of course a special festive feast on Christmas day.

It’s the perfect way to end what’s been a stressful 2020 for all, and feel relaxed and at ease going into the new year.
