Princess Mary’s brother-in-law, Prince Joachim of Denmark has been pictured for the first time since he underwent brain surgery last month.

The 51-year-old royal was photographed with his older brother Prince Frederik, 52, at his summer home Château de Cayx in the south of France. In the photo, which was shared by the Danish royal family on Instagram on Wednesday, the pair could be seen enjoying a meal together outside.

An official statement released by the Danish royal family explained: “HRH The Crown Prince returned home from France yesterday, where he has visited his brother, H.K.H. Prince Joachim, H.K.H. Princess Marie and the couple’s two children at the Château de Cayx.

“Prince Joachim is still recovering well, but still needs peace around him.”

Joachim was admitted to Toulouse University Hospital in France last month, where he was quickly taken in for surgery for a blood clot in his brain. Thankfully, the operation was a success and the 51-year-old is now in a stable condition.

At the time, an official statement released by the Danish royal family explained: “His Royal Highness Prince Joachim was admitted to the University Hospital of Toulouse, France, late last night. The prince was operated on immediately afterwards for a blood clot, [it] was successful. The condition of His Royal Highness is stable today.

“The Royal House has no further information at this point in time, but it is the wish of Her Majesty the Queen that the public respects the privacy of the family during the hospitalisation.”

Prince Joachim, who is the youngest son of Queen Margrethe, is married to Princess Marie and the couple share two children together, Hendrik, 11, and Athena, 8. The Danish royal also has two other children from a previous marriage – 18-year-old Felix and 20-year-old Nikolai.

Joachim and his family had been staying in their holiday home in the south of France prior to his hospitalisation. Just days before they had celebrated Prince Felix’s 18th birthday.
