The first trailer for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey is here, and it’s tantalisingly juicy. In two preview clips released on Monday, Oprah asks Meghan if she was “silenced” by the royal family, while Prince Harry appears to take a swipe at his father and senior members of the royal family.

Meghan doesn’t speak in either of the clips, despite the fact that she features in the majority of the interview, but the look on her face says it all. She appears to have tears in her eyes throughout the clips and looks pained when asked if there was “a breaking point” that caused the couple to step back from their royal duties in 2020.

Harry tells Oprah that his biggest concern was “history repeating itself” in reference to his late mother Princess Diana.

“You know, for me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her [Princess Diana] going through this process by herself all those years ago,” he says. “Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we had each other.”

After separating from Prince Charles in 1992, Diana spoke openly about how hard she found the process of leaving the royal family. She famously told the BBC’s Martin Bashir in a 1995 interview that “life became very difficult” for her and that members of the royal household were to blame.

Later, Oprah touches on how the couple’s situation in the UK was “almost unsurvivable,” seemingly referring to their strained relationship with the British press. Harry’s contempt for the press has only grown since marrying Meghan in 2018 and he’s cited them as his reason for stepping back from his royal duties.

Diana’s difficult relationship with the media was also well-documented and in a 2017 documentary marking the 20th anniversary of her death, Harry publicly blamed the paparazzi for their part in the car crash that killed his mother.

“I think one of the hardest things to come to terms with is the fact that the people that chased her into the tunnel were the same people that were taking photographs of her while she was still dying on the back seat of the car,” he said at the time.

“She had quite a severe head injury but she was very much still alive on the back seat. And those people that caused the accident, instead of helping, they were taking photographs on the back seat, and then those photographs made their way back to news desks.”

CBS, the American television station airing the Oprah interview, has promised that nothing is off the table in the chat and it appears they delivered. At one point, Oprah says, “You’ve said some pretty shocking things here.”

Recently, Oprah’s good friend Gale King said the talk-show host told her it’s the best interview she’s ever done.

The interview was filmed at Montecito, Santa Barbara, where the royal couple are currently living with their one-year-old son Archie. It is set to air in the US on Sunday, March 7. It’s not yet clear when it will air in Australia.
