Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson has lifted the lid on her relationship with ex-husband Prince Andrew in a candid chat with People magazine, calling him a “kind, good man”.

The couple, who divorced in 1996, have remained close ever since their split. More recently, Fergie publicly defended her ex-husband over his controversial relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which saw the father-of-two stepped back from royal duties in November 2019.

When asked about Andrew, Fergie responded by saying: “Whatever challenges he has, I will stand firm to the co-parenters that we are together … I believe that he’s a kind, good man, and he’s been a fabulous father to the girls.”

In the tell-all chat, the Duchess of York also spoke of her dear friend Princess Diana. Fergie, who was close friends with Diana before her tragic death, opened up on what she thinks the late princess would think of both Catherine and Meghan.

She would be very proud of her sons and their wives,” she said. “And she would be just like me, obsessed with her grandchildren. Because that’s what she loved.

“If she were sitting with me right now, I know she would say, ‘I am so proud of both of my boys and the wonderful wives they have chosen’. Because each has got her own voice.”

Fergie, who turns 62 later this year, also spoke of coming into her own and being more content and confident with being herself.

“It’s like I’ve gotten out of my own way,” she told the US publication. “I’ve really become Sarah. The Duchess is there. Good old Fergie’s there too. But Sarah is authentically present.”

Prince Andrew’s ex-wife also opened up on overcoming the pressures of being perfect. “I have to be aware that trying to be perfect is no longer necessary,” she said, adding: “actually being Sarah is just enough.”

Fergie revealed her journey of self-discovery came through writing her debut novel, Her Heart for a Compass, which is set for release this August. The duchess first announced the exciting news back in January via social media.

“I’m delighted to announce my first historical romance novel, Her Heart for a Compass, which will be published in August!” the duchess wrote at the time, alongside a video of herself strolling through the grounds of Windsor’s Royal Lodge in a Victorian-era outfit – in theme with the historical setting of the book. The duchess opted for a floor-length pleated skirt, a fitted overcoat, a high-neck blouse and gloves.

Sarah went on to explain that her new novel is set in the 19th century and “is a coming-of-age story about being brave and rebellious, and daring to follow your heart against the odds”. She added that while the story itself is based on one of her ancestors, it also draws on her own life journey and experiences too.
