It’s not uncommon for younger siblings to emulate their older kinfolk, but a recent speech delivered by Prince Harry to the United Nations has drawn unfavourable criticism from royal watchers for its striking similarities to a speech Prince William delivered in 2021.

Prince Harry delivered the keynote speech at the UN General Assembly on July 18 to mark Nelson Mandela International Day, covering a wide-ranging series of political matters such as climate change, the global pandemic, and the war in Ukraine.

Although Harry delivered some powerful statements on recent global matters it was certain elements of his speech that really got royal watchers talking, particularly the apparent similarities between Harry’s speech and a speech Prince William delivered to the Church of Scotland in 2021.

While reflecting on Mandella’s inspirational leadership, Harry spoke of the connection he felt to Africa.

“It’s where I felt closest to my mother and sought solace after she died,” he said.

Astute fans were quick to notice that Harry’s comments sounded similar to William’s comments about the “Scottish outdoors” in his 2021 speech.

“And in the dark days of grief that followed, I found comfort and solace in the Scottish outdoors,” William said at the time.

The striking similarities between the two speeches didn’t stop there with social media users citing that Harry’s comments about his wife Meghan Markle echoed William’s previous comments about his wife The Duchess of Cambridge.

During his 2021 speech, William noted that “it was here in Scotland, 20 years ago, that I first met Catherine”.

“Needless to say, the time when you meet your future wife holds a very special place in your heart,” he said.

Harry’s speech to the UN shared similar sentiments, commenting on how Africa was “where I knew I’d found a soulmate in my wife”.

Following Harry’s speech fans were swift with their criticism of the royal and his apparent”copy and paste” efforts.
