Karl Stefanovic has thrown his support behind Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk over her firm stance on the Sunshine State’s borders amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Palaszczuk has come under fire in recent weeks over her refusal to loosen any of the state’s hard border restrictions, specifically blocking those from New South Wales and Victoria from entering, and on Friday the premier confirmed she would not be moved on the issue anytime soon.

However Today show host Karl Stefanovic – who hails from Queensland – backed his home state’s premier on the Channel Nine program on Friday morning and said he is struggling to understand why so many people are criticising Palaszczuk’s decision.

“I’m personally finding the pile-on of Annastacia Palaszczuk right now a little hard to understand,” Stefanovic said on Friday. “From what I can see Annastacia is doing what she was elected to do, fiercely protect her state.

“When you look at the terrible impact of COVID in Victoria who can blame her?”

Premier Palaszczuk was due to address the National Cabinet on Friday morning, along with other state and territory leaders, and domestic borders were expected to be top of the bill. Ahead of the meeting, the premier told reporters the criticism is “intimidating” but said she will not be intimidated.

“I get out of bed every day and do my job but my family are very upset. But I tell them to hang in there,” she said.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged state and territory leaders to start planning to reopen their borders to the rest of the country in time for Christmas.

Speaking during Question Time, Morrison said: “By Christmas, Mr Speaker, we should aim for Australians to be able to go to work, to be able to be with their family at Christmas, and to return to visit their friends and to look forward to a positive 2021.

“We cannot resign Australia to being a dislocated nation under COVID-19.”
