A police investigation has been launched in the New South Wales town of Stockton after the bodies of an elderly couple were discovered on Friday morning.
Emergency services were called to a home in the town, which is about 175km north of Sydney, at around 6am this morning after concerns were raised for the welfare of the occupants.
Upon arrival at the property on Newcastle Street, NSW Police discovered the body of a 75-year-old woman. A short time later, the body of a 76-year-old man was retrieved by emergency services from the surf at nearby Stockton Beach.
Police also confirmed that the deceased couple were husband and wife.
“Crime scenes were established at both locations, which are being examined by specialist forensic officers,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“Newcastle City detectives have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Initial inquiries suggest no third parties are being sought.”
NSW Police confirmed they will await post mortem examinations before determining the circumstances around their deaths. They will also review the couple’s medical histories.
