A surfer in his 50s has died after being attacked by a shark on the New South Wales mid north coast Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to Tuncurry Beach, Forster, about 11am Tuesday. NSW Police said they found a man suffering from “critical injuries to his upper right thigh after being attacked while surfing”.

The man was pulled from the water and officers from Manning-Great Lakes Police District commenced CPR, however, he died at the scene.

“Tuncurry Beach and Forster Main Beach are currently closed,” they wrote. “Police will be working with the Department of Primary Industries to identify the species responsible.”

NSW Ambulance also confirmed the news in a tweet, writing, “Despite the best efforts of paramedics and bystanders at the scene the man could not be resuscitated.”

The incident comes just a few months after a 63-year-old woman was attacked by a shark while swimming at Merimbula on the far south coast of NSW. Luckily, she survived the attack.
