British PM David Cameron has famously said, “When people’s love is divided by law, it is the law that needs to change.”
And as the clock struck midnight on Friday night, the same sex marriage law came into effect throughout England and Wales. Two days later, international music sensation proud gay activist has come out and said he will finally marry his long time partner David Furnish in a celebratory event.
He told NBC in an interview that “we’ll do it very quietly”.
“But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion,” said John.
Elton John and his partner were united in a civil partnership in 2005 when they became legal in the UK, and have two children together.
“I’m very proud of Britain and the laws that we’ve seen come into existence since we’ve been together,” said Elton John in a news interview.
Independent and media polls show about two-thirds of Britons back gay unions, with support highest among the young. Britain has seen none of the large street protests against gay marriage that have taken place in France.
Prime Minster David Cameron hailed the move, saying that no two people should be denied the right to get married on the basis of their sexuality.
In celebration of this historic move, on Friday rainbow flags were hoisted over two government buildings heralding what Deputy Prime Minister of the UK, Nick Clegg said was “a symbol to celebrate a massive achievement.”
