There’s perhaps nothing more special than welcoming a new addition to the family, whether it’s a child of your own, a grandchild or even a great grandchild – and Bert and Patti Newton were lucky enough to become grandparents for the sixth time this week.
The showbiz veterans’ daughter Lauren Newton welcomed her sixth child – a beautiful baby boy – with husband Matt Welsh on Thursday, August 20, and Patti wasted no time in showing him off on social media.
The 75-year-old shared an adorable photo of baby Alby – named after grandfather Bert Newton, whose full name is Albert – on Instagram on Saturday evening, and revealed she hasn’t yet been able to meet him due to Covid-19 restrictions on hospitals.
“Little Alby James we have all fallen in love with you,” she wrote. “Congratulations Matt and Lauren can’t wait to hold him xx”

Many people congratulated Patti on the happy news and shared their love for the new addition’s sweet moniker, with one writing: “Love the name! It was my Dad’s name – Albert James (but he was called Alby!) It would have been his Birthday on 5th Aug. Congratulations to you all.”
Another said: “I’m so so thrilled at the safe birth of Alby! Congrats to the whole family and welcome to this crazy world Alby.” While another commented: “Congratulations to Lauren and Matt and all members of the Newton/Welsh family on the safe and Happy arrival of little Alby. He is so beautiful. God bless you all.”

It comes just days after Lauren announced her son’s arrival on social media, as she shared a photograph of baby Alby and dad Matt in hospital. The 40-year-old gave birth five weeks early and thanked the staff at Frances Perry House in a heartfelt post. Lauren and husband Matt Welsh, a former Olympic swimmer, are already parents to five children; Sam, 11, Eva, nine, Lola, six, Monty, two, and 15-month-old daughter Perla.
“Alby James Newton Welsh. Born at 8:20 on 20/8/2020,” Lauren wrote on social media on Friday. “We are so grateful to the amazing @dr_stephencole and the wonderful team at @frances_perry_house.
“It has been a long journey and we are so thrilled to have gorgeous Alby here safely. He is 7 weeks early but doing really well.”
