Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas has reportedly left his entire US$61 million (AU$92 million) to charity, following his death earlier this month.

The Spartacus star passed away on February 5 at the age of 103, and his famous son Michael announced the sad news to the world on social media at the time.

However, according to The Daily Mirror, rather than leaving his fortune to his three surviving sons or wife of more than 65 years Anne Buydens, Douglas instead decided to bequeath the majority of his money to charity.

The UK news outlet reported over the weekend that the film star left instruction in his will for $50 million of his fortune to be distributed to various good causes through the Douglas Foundation. That leaves around $12 million to be distributed most likely to family, however this has not been confirmed and many of Douglas’ closest relatives are highly successful in their own right, including actor Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.

“It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” he wrote. “To the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.

“But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband.”

The 75-year-old actor added: “Kirk’s life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet.

“Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad- I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son. #KirkDouglas”
