Beloved British sitcom actress Josephine Tewson, who was best known for her role as Elizabeth Warden in Keeping Up Appearances, has passed away at the age of 91.
Tewson’s manager, Jean Diamond, issued a statement announcing that the star had passed away peacefully at a care home in London.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Josephine Tewson,” the statement read.
Born February 26, 1931, Tewson became familiar with the world of entertainment at a young age given that her father was a professional musician and played the double bass in the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Following her graduation from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1952, Tewson made regular appearances in comedy sketches alongside Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker for David Frost on Sunday before later appearing on the BBC Radio Comedy programme Mostly Monkhouse with David Jason.
Tewson portrayed Edna Hawkins in the British sitcom Shelley from 1979 to 1982 and in 1988 played Jane Travers in Ronnie Barker’s sitcom Clarence.
Her most well-known role, however, came when she was cast as Elizabeth Warden, the nervous neighbour of the eccentric Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances. During the show’s impressive five-series run, Tewson appeared in almost every episode.
Following her highly successful run on Keeping Up Appearances, Tewson appeared as Miss Davenport in Last of the Summer Wine from 2003 to 2010 and made several other television appearances in Heartbeat, Midsomer Murders, and Doctors. In 2004 she discussed her role in Keeping Up Appearances for the two part documentary Comedy Connections.
Tewson launched a one-woman show titled, Still Keeping Up Appearances?, in 2012 where she discussed her time on the successful sitcom.
Following the news of Tewson’s death, fans quickly took to social media to convey their grief over her death while remembering some of her most iconic moments.
