Black basics never looked so good. Source: Starts at 60 Marketplace

Staple items like tailored pants, a basic blouse and a good pair of boots are the backbone of a good wardrobe and wearing them in black provides the perfect canvas to mix and match your look for any occasion.

The key is layering; adding colour with accessories, scarves and elegant tops and cardigans to create a look that is perfectly suited to you. Not only is this kind of dressing and easy way to transition your look depending on the occasion, it’s also budget friendly, as you can wear those black staples for years without them looking tired and overused.

If you’re not too sure where to start, don’t fret! We’ve put together five different looks using the same three black basics, changing it up with a new accessory or two to create stylish looks you’ll love.

Black is back

For the first look, we’ve kept things relatively simple. Our model is pictured sporting a pair of black trousers by Australian label Cordelia St. We especially love how the pants are both comfortable and flattering without skimping on style. If you’ve been searching for the perfect pair of trousers, you can pick these up for just $41.97, down from $59.95, over at the Starts at 60 Marketplace. We paired the pants with a long-sleeve blouse from Adrift ($48.75, down from $65), and a pair of Tesselli boots ($189.95). To give the outfit a bit more oomph, we accessorised with a bold, colourful necklace from Ruby Olive. Unfortunately the necklace worn by the model in the picture is sold out at the moment (it was a hot item!), however, the equally stylish Winter Smartie Tiered Wood Necklace ($49) by the same designer will do the trick!

Boots: Tesselli Travis (black)
Necklace: Not in stock, opt for Winter Smartie Tiered Wood Necklace

Cover up with colour

If you’re not much of a necklace person, but still want to add a touch of colour, a shawl will do the trick marvellously. They’re versatile and timeless and are great for those cooler nights when the seasons transition around autumn and spring. You can find the colourful shawl our model is wearing, which is now on sale for $67.50, over at the Starts at 60 Marketplace.

Casual comfort

Why stick to just one accessory when you can have two? For the third look, we’ve embraced comfort without compromising on style by adding a cardigan by Bamboo Body into the mix. Crafted from silky soft bamboo material, this emerald green cardigan adds a classic and timeless flare to the outfit, and it can be yours for just $99.95! We also paired it with the same colourful necklace from the first picture. Not a fan of necklaces? Browse through Ruby Olive’s other accessories here. Some colourful bracelets or earrings would work just as well!

Red, baby, red

This could be our favourite look yet. The deep red cardigan and the natural necklace really makes the black basics look like a totally different outfit. You can pick up the cardigan by Bamboo Baby ($109.95 – 119.95) and the wooden necklace by Ruby Olive ($48) over at the Starts at 60 Marketplace. They both also come in a variety of colours, so you can choose the best hue for you.

Ready to party

If you love colour, then you’re going to love this last look! This time we dressed up the black basics with a floral-print shawl with tassels by Adrift ($67.50, down from $90) and a long multi-coloured necklace ($85) by Ruby Olive. This outfit is a bit more dressy than the others, and could take you anywhere from a fancy lunch to a smart-casual birthday dinner.
