If you’re craving something sweet but don’t want to stray too far off your health plan, you could give these lighter chocolate fudge brownies a go! While they still have the exact same mouthwatering flavour, they just don’t have too much of the bad stuff involved.

There’s a massive reduction on the amount of butter involved plus the switch to brown sugar can make you feel less guilty. Plus, the use of apple sauce in this recipe is actually a great way of substituting the bad stuff without sacrificing the end result!

  • oil spray
  • 150g plain flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 60g reduced fat oil spread, melted
  • 220g brown sugar
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 185ml apple sauce
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla bean extract
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, for dusting

  1. Preheat oven to 180C. Lightly spray a 20cm square cake tin with oil and line the base and sides with baking paper.
  2. Sift the flour, cocoa and baking powder into a bowl. Whisk the spread, sugar, eggs, apple sauce and vanilla in a bowl until combined. Stir into the flour mixture until just combined.
  3. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake tin and spread evenly. Bake for 25 minutes or until moist crumbs cling to a skewer inserted into the centre of the brownie. Stand for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool. Cut into 16 squares. Dust with the extra cocoa.
