As a buyer here at the ‘Fo, I taste through a lot of wines every day and there’s always a few surprises. As I lined up the wines from this Tassie producer, I expected to be focussed on the pinot noir and chardonnay. This syrah was almost an afterthought as it’s not a variety you seek out from the island. But hot damn this is an excellent wine! My partner and I ended up drinking the entire bottle. It’s impeccable cool-climate shiraz. You’ll find the herbal, medicinal and earthy qualities of the best of Hawke’s Bay and Beechworth paired with the layered and complex fruit of Northern Rhône, all fit into a neat package with the elegance and spice you’d more associate with Tassie pinot noir. This is one I’ll order for myself at home.
