About the Region – Barossa Valley

Australia’s oldest and best known wine region, the Barossa Valley is a warm climate region in South Australia. Vines were first planted in Barossa in 1842 and today there are many sixth-generation vignerons working in the region. The area is also renowned for its artisan food producers and, situated just over an hour’s drive north of Adelaide, the state capital, it is a popular tourist destination. Bold Shiraz wines are the signature and most lauded bounty of the Barossa, but among the 13,256 hectares under vine there is also Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro and Semillon, as well as the Riesling that dominates in the nearby hills of the Eden Valley. The Barossa has some of the oldest continually producing vineyards in the world and the Barossa Grape and Wine Association has established an Old Vine Charter and a register of old vines to protect the region’s vine heritage. The area has two main soil types, both of which are relatively low in fertility – brown, sandy to clay loams and sandy light-brownish grey to dark-grey brown soils – but there is wide variation throughout the region.

Collection Grenache | 2018 | 14.80%

From old bush vines at our Watunga Road Vineyard, this wine is proof, if any were needed, that Grenache and the Barossa were made for each other. Packed with juicy red berry fruits, it has a savoury edge, generous mouthfeel and smooth tannin.

Collection Shiraz | 2018 | 14.70%

From mature vines at our vineyard in the heart of the Barossa Valley, this is a fine example of Australia’s most famous wine style: full-bodied with rich, ripe fruit, savoury oak and soft tannin. Grilled steak, beef casserole or hot pot, beef spare rib, ratatouille. This wine is from select vineyards on the Barossa Valley floor, including Handpicked’s own Watunga Road Vineyard, which has 12-hectares of Shiraz and Grenache vines. The old bush vine Grenache was planted in 1975, single wire trellis Shiraz plantings took place in 1998/99 and new plantings in spring 2016 will include a new Shiraz block. Drip irrigation was installed in 2015 to insure against drought in this warm, arid zone and to improve general soil health. However, water is used sparingly and strictly according to seasonal need and availability of this precious resource.
