He’d been able to grant his mother’s last wish at her funeral, but now Todd Fisher has finally been able to do the same for his sister.
Debbie Reynolds told her son she wanted to be buried with her daughter Carrie, after her sudden death. Carrie Fisher said she wanted to have a public service for her funeral.
That finally happened yesterday, when a public memorial was held at the Hollywood Hills cemetery, where both have been buried.
Speaking at the memorial service Todd said his mother didn’t want to attend Carrie’s funeral and instead wanted to be buried with her.
“I didn’t know she was going to leave us that very next day and when she looked at me to ask permission to leave, she said she wanted to be with Carrie, and she closed her eyes and went to sleep. It was a very peaceful exit that only my mother could’ve
“She was trained in Hollywood where they teach you to make a great entrance and exit. … A beautiful exit.”
Carrie Fisher, famous for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars movies, died suddenly on December 27, after having a heart attack on a flight from London.
She was 60-years-old.
Her mother, Singing in the Rain star Debbie Reynolds, died less than a day later, at the age of 84.
The celebration of their lives yesterday included a montage of photos and footage of the pair, accompanied by a score by Star Wars composer John Williams.
Todd said the event was all of their ‘people’; extended family, close friends and fans.
“We would be sharing these same kinds of films and photographs, telling the same stories. … You’re gonna see a lot of things you’ve never, ever seen before,” Todd said, during the event, attended by over 1200 people.
The sentiments of the original song written by James Blunt for Carrie and played at the event shared what all those who attended the memorial were feeling.
“You broke more than my heart when you didn’t say goodbye,” were some of the lyrics, but the final line said it all.
“I’m here to let you know, I’m here to let you go.”
