Shredded yet another kitchen sponge, trying to clean the cheese grater? We’ve all been there. There’s nothing more frustrating than cleaning a sticky cheese grater.

Avoiding the clean-up? Here’s a no-fuss way to tackle a hard-to-clean cheese grater and all you need is a raw potato.

Surprisingly, if you have a potato on hand, you can easily clean your cheese grater by grating it. How? The acid and the hardness of the potato pushes the cheese out, making it a lot easier to wipe clean.

Next time you use your cheese grater, soak it in soapy water immediately for several minutes to soften the food particles, then grate each side with a raw potato to loosen soft cheese or leftover sticky residue. Just make sure to not soak it too long as it could rust!

Then place a drop or two of dishwashing liquid onto a nylon scrub brush (similar to a vegetable scrub brush) and scrub the cheese grater inside and out, then rinse thoroughly or place in the dishwasher — it’s that easy!

You’re probably wondering what to do with all that shredded potato. Well, you can whip up an easy-to-make potato bake, and all you need is a few simple ingredients. Make in advance and store in an airtight container in the fridge. You can find a delicious recipe here.

What do you think? Have you tried this before? Do you have any tips on cleaning a cheese grater?
