From baking soda to tea, 7 tips to stop your shoes smelling

There are some great ways to keep your shoes smelling fresh.

Spending hours on your feet can cause more than just pain and anguish – and you may have noticed nasty odours building up in your shoes.

While washing them can restore old and tired footwear, there are some natural remedies to stop odours in their tracks – and keep your feet feeling fresh throughout the day.

From a sprinkle of baking soda, to a well-placed tea bag, there are a number of household products just waiting to rescue you at the most desperate of times.

So put your feet up and relax – there’s no need to suffer in silence anymore.

Sprinkle baking soda

Baking soda is a natural deodoriser, and works by absorbing smells and excess moisture.

Just sprinkle a little in your shoe to lightly cover it, and leave it overnight so it can get to work. It can also work by pouring a little into a coffee filter, sealing the bag, and leaving it inside your shoe.

In the morning, just shake it out or vacuum it up and your shoes should be odour-free.

Use charcoal inserts

Like baking soda, charcoal works to absorb smells and moisture – so they’re perfect for making your shoes smell fresh and new.

Slip in some activated charcoal insoles, available from most stores, and leave them overnight.

Just a few hours later, you can take them out and enjoy a fresher smell when you’re heading out.

Stick them in the freezer

Yes, really.

If you’re struggling with strong odours in your footwear, put them in a resealable bag and inside the freezer for a few hours, or preferably, overnight.

The freezing temperature kills bacteria and leaves your shoes scent-free in the morning.

Spray some rubbing alcohol

By spritzing your shoes with the liquid, it will kill any bacteria on contact.

A build up of bacteria is what causes a strong smell, a little like body odour, so killing it early will stop scents building up straight away.

Spray some deodorant

It may sound a bit silly, but applying some gel deodorant inside the heel can reduce friction and help to prevent painful blisters from developing. Your feet and shoes will smell nice as a bonus!

Use tea

It’s lovely to drink, but it can also be useful for your feet.

If you end up with blisters, soak your feet in a tub with warm tea to sooth them. If your shoes are a bit smelly, a dry tea bag placed inside can help absorb any odours!

Don’t forget to wash regularly

It may sound obvious, but as odours build up primarily from bacteria, it’s important to keep your feet clean to prevent it happening. Washing them morning and night can help prevent nasty smells and keep your feet in great condition.
