You may not instantly notice the mosquito bite, but the bump that is left behind is typically swollen, sore, or itchy.

Did you know we itch due to the residual saliva left behind from the mosquito? Most mosquito bites are harmless, however some can cause complications. Mosquitoes are responsible for carrying many diseases through the human population. While there are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes in the world, only a small number are a concern.

While creams and ointments help, you probably have a few natural remedies already lying around at home.

Oatmeal

One remedy that can surely cure an itch, may also be one of your favourite breakfast choices. Surprisingly oatmeal has been used as a soothing agent for years. Oatmeal can relieve itching and swelling because it contains compounds that have anti-irritant qualities.

To ease the itch, simply mix equal amounts of oatmeal and water in a bowl, until you have a paste-like substance. Spoon the paste onto a washcloth and hold onto the irritated area for ten minutes, then wipe the skin clean.

If you have been affected with more than one bite, an oatmeal bath might be a better solution. Add one cup of oatmeal into a bathtub, full of warm water and let soak for 20 minutes.

Apple cider vinegar

Can’t shake an itch? Apple cider vinegar has proven to be a fantastic soothing remedy. Fetch the vinegar from the pantry and apply a small amount to the bump. The acid from the vinegar helps reduce stinging and burning sensations. If you have given your bite a good scratch, the vinegar can also act as a natural disinfectant. More than one bite? A warm bath filled with 2 1/2 cups vinegar does the trick!

Crushed Ice

Crushed ice can instantly prevent inflammation. The cold numbs the skin, which can give you an immediate short-term relief. Only leave the ice on for five minutes as it can damage the skin, and if you don’t, add a barrier like a wash cloth between the ice and bump.

Honey

Honey has been used as a health remedy for many years. Due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, honey can help prevent inflammation and infection. Simply apply a small amount directly to the affected area.

Toothpaste

This might sound strange, but toothpaste is a great immediate pain relief. Apply a small amount of all-natural peppermint toothpaste, and allow the paste to dry before wiping away.

What do you use to stop the itch? Have you used any of these remedies before?
