The simple trick for easy microwave cleaning

You'll never have to put it off again

If you’ve occasionally failed to cover your food when you microwave it you’ll know just how much gunk can build up inside it.

However, this handy tip — using only water, vinegar and steam — will have your microwave clean in a jiffy.

Simple cleaning solutions, like this one, are just the best. What’s better is that this solution requires no scrubbing and only about a minute of elbow grease to get your microwave sparkling clean.

What you’ll need

  • A microwave safe bowl or glass measuring jug
  • A toothpick
  • A sponge
  • Vinegar
  • Water

What you need to do

Fill your bowl or jug with 2 cups of water. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar.

Drop the toothpick into the water to help keep it from boiling over the edges.

Put the water in the microwave, shut the door and run the microwave on high for between 3 and 5 minutes.

When you hear that magic ‘ding’, resist the temptation to open the door. Instead, leave it closed for 2-3 minutes, which will allow the steam to continue doing its job of loosening any caked up bits of food. The vinegar will help eliminate any odours.

Once you’ve opened the door, be careful not to burn yourself on the bowl or jug of water. It gets pretty hot! Remove the turntable tray (use an oven glove so you don’t burn your hands) and was it in the sink.

With the sponge, wipe down the inside of your microwave and marvel at how easily the dirt and food comes off!
