Futuristic plans for transport becoming a remote control reality

You can take photos with them, but would you be happy to travel with them?

Drones were originally used for military purposes, but it is not uncommon for even children to play with them these days.

A drone is simply a remote piloted aircraft and they have evolved to become useful in a variety of innovative ways.

They can be used to survey dangerous areas or remote locations, through the use of attached cameras.

With some retailing for under $100, they have even been promoted as a ‘toy’, or at least offering a unique photographic opportunity for the camera enthusiast who wants a different view of the world.

This week comes news that Dubai is set to be the first city to have taxi drones.

Chinese drone maker EHang Inc announced it will supply passenger-carrying drones to Dubai, which is aiming to become the world’s first city to allow such vehicles, in July.

The drone was only be able to carry one person, and one small suitcase, and fly for short times and distances, but it will be piloted and monitored by a command center on the ground.

To ensure safety, if any components malfunction or disconnect, the drones will immediately land in the closest possible area, and communication between the machines and the command center is encrypted, according to EHang’s website.

The introduction of self-flying passenger drones is part of Dubai’s plan to create a smart city by 2030, when 25 percent of its transport will be automated.

What do you think? Would you travel in a taxi drone?
