The most important thing to remember in your 60s, is that your skin is now producing less oil.

By this time, you will likely have noticed that your skin feels dryer and less taut.

So your main objective as this stage is to do everything you can to replenish moisture.

If you’ve had the same skincare routine for the past 30 or 40 years, it maybe time to revisit some of the steps and identify what needs to be changed.

Here are some tips to help you care for your skin.

Wash Your Face Less
Yes, this may sound odd, but, due to the lack of oil that your skin is producing on its own, you’ll need to take extra precautions to retain moisture. According to Livestrong, since washing your face actually removes moisture from the skin, cut back on the frequency with which you cleanse. In the morning, rather than scrubbing, simply splash your face with cold water to feel refreshed and then in the evening simply wash your face once with an oil-based cleanser.

Load Up On Sunscreen
We’ve been told to be sun safe all our lives so it’s no secret that the sun is harmful for your skin. Not only is our skin starting to dry out naturally, the sun can also exacerbate the dryness. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen daily to protect your skin, and consider using an SPF of 60 or higher. If you plan on being outdoors for a long time, wear a hat to shade your face and neck.

Exfoliate Regularly

The process of renewing skin cells slows down as you age, so in your 60s, exfoliating becomes very important to speed this process along. Exfoliate two to three times per week to remove dried out and dead skin cells from your face as this rejuvenates the face and allows new, healthy skin cells to grow as well as helps to maximise the benefits of your moisturising products.

Use Oil-Based Moisturiser
If you did not make a habit of moisturising regularly when you were younger, now is the time to start. Apply an oil-based serum twice a day and choose something that contains botanical extracts, such as shea butter as these ingredients will give your skin an extra dose of hydration and help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

    Our eyes are lenses that send information about the intensity of light to our brain. The brain then triggers the release of oils from the skin. In today’s society the wearing of hats, caps and sun glasses have send false information to the brain resulting in less oil secreted. If you need to wear sun glasses, wear them where the fashion conscious wear them! On top of the head, protecting the bald patch.
    Only wear hats or caps when exposes to the sun for a prolonged period of time. During short walks (1 to 2 hours) we do not need protection on top of the head nor in front of our eyes. The sun has never detrimentally affected animals that live outside all year, in all sorts of weather.

    The sun being the cause of kin cancer is very much in doubt now. Skin cancer is increasing as we move further away from the equatorial reaches towards the colder climes. The highest rate of skin cancer is in the northern parts of Europe, the British Isles, and among the miners in Wales. These people hardly see the sun. Northern Scotland is not recommended as the place to go sunbathing. And I read that there was no increase in reported cases of skin cancer from those parts of the world directly underneath the hole in the ozone layer.

    Some researchers now seem to have come to the conclusion that the sun is actually beneficial for us. This research shows an increase in cases of rickets among children too well protected from the beneficial effects of the sun.
    Before the 1930s, skin cancer was rare. Since that time the incidence of melanoma has gone up 1,800%. In just the last 30 years, the death rate from melanoma has increased more than fourfold, while the incidence of all types of skin cancer has more than doubled.
    But how could these substantial increases be “caused” by the sun? Our sun is billions of years old. It’s not likely that the sun’s rays have suddenly changed in the last 80 years. It’s because of alterations that have occurred in the human diet – particularly in the last 100 years – we have become far more vulnerable to all types of cancer, including skin cancer.

    Science has proven that some foods can promote skin cancer. As a population, we now eat these foods in great abundance. On the other hand, there are other foods that strongly prevent skin cancer. Unfortunately, we now consume far too few of these foods.

    Want to improve your skin? Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, drink pure non-chlorinated water, avoid meats, cow’s milk dairy products, alcohol and tobacco.

    I agree with everything you say Hans. I don’t wear sunglasses and the glare doesn’t bother me, I am nearly 70 and eat a good diet, I also don’t wear sunscreen and my skin is pretty good. On the other hand my grown up daughters cannot take the glare and have to wear sunglasses.
