Remember your pets in the cyclones and storms!

With crazy weather attacking the Queensland coastline and Northern Territory we’re all running for cover. But please don’t forget about your pets!

The RSPCA has just released a statement from RSPCA QLD Chief Inspector Daniel Young saying, “People must understand the possible implications and immediately move their animals to higher ground. Currently a lot of animals are simply being left to fend for themselves and unfortunately, once flood waters have risen, it can be too late to attempt safe rescues.”

“Make certain domestic animals have access to shelter and can move off the ground if the property is prone to flooding. We urge people make provisions to keep their animals safe if by any chance evacuations become necessary. Ideally move them to the top of the house and leave them with food and water.”

If you’re in an area likely to be affected follow these steps:

ENSURE YOUR PET HAS IDENTIFICATION
If your pet becomes lost in a storm, having appropriate ID can help them be reunited safely. Is your pet microchipped and has a collar with ID?

Don’t tether pets if outside – they may do themselves more harm trying to break free.

Take time to prepare a Disaster Pet Preparedness Plan for you and your pet if you need to evacuate.
