Everything must go: Russell Crowe to hold ‘divorce auction’

Going, going, gone! Russell Crowe is officially divorced and he’s ready to cleanse himself of his marital possessions. 

Rather than divvying up his belongings with now ex-wife Danielle Spencer, the Kiwi-born actor has decided to auction off his marriage memorabilia and have a little fun in the process. 

Sotheby’s will host The Art of Divorce auction on April 7, which also happens to be the former couple’s wedding anniversary, with 223 items up for grabs and sales expected to reach about AU$3.6 million.

Crowe and Spencer separated five years ago, but only recently finalised their divorce. 

Some of the unique items up for sale include a chariot (valued at $5,000-$10,000) from the set of Crowe’s breakout film Gladiator, a pair of Doc Martens (valued at $10,000-$15,000) from the set of Nazi-themed film Romper Stomper, a violin (valued at $110,000 – $140,000) from blockbuster Master and Commander and a leather groin protector (valued at $500-$600) from boxing film Cinderella Man. 

Crowe will also be selling off a $124,579 yellow diamond ring he gifted to Spencer during their 15-year marriage, as well as a number of designer watches from Rolex and Cartier.

Crowe first floated the idea of the auction last year when he tweeted a picture of his storage room saying: “You ever look around and think … bloody hell I’ve got a lot of stuff… yeah, me too.” He added, “April 7th next year I’ll be having an auction. Career stuff, stuff I’ve collected and stuff in general. Paintings, Aubrey’s violin, watches … if you like stuff, save the date”

Members of the public can register to bid online, over the phone or live at the auction, which will be held in Sydney. For Crowe, it’s a novel way to shed his unwanted belongings and make a little money on the side. 

He told the Daily Telegraph, “one of the things you learn as you grow older is you don’t need touchstones from your past as much as you need a clear road ahead.”

Many couples struggle to divide their assets when it comes to divorce with plenty ending in nasty fights and bitter battles over who gets to keep what. Perhaps Rusty’s onto a good idea!
