Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and family are mourning the loss of a beloved member of their family. Their dog Ziggy, who was a wedding gift, died on Sunday.

Images and an official statement was posted on Instagram talking of their loss.

Translated the post reads:

Sunday said the Crown Prince’s family bid farewell to their beloved dog Ziggy.

The dog has been part of the family for 12 years and was a wedding gift to the royal couple.

Ziggy was a faithful and loving dog, who unfortunately suffered from chronic renal failure and osteoarthritis. Despite this was high quality of life to the last.

Ziggy was a much photographed member of the family.

The Danish Kennel Club wanted to give the couple a puppy for their wedding so Frederik and Mary chose a Border Collie originally named Jezabel.

Princess Mary renamed her Ziggy.

Ziggy was of pure English Border Collie lines, and her father has regularly been featured in the local media.

Ziggy too has been in the media spotlight over the years, often appearing in the official family photos, such as for Prince Christian’s 10th birthday and when Princess Mary was on the cover of Australian Women’s Weekly.
