Science claims that cat owners are smarter than dog owners… what do you reckon?

We’ve fought like cats and dogs over which animal makes a better pet, but now there’s another score to settle. Controversial research has argued that cat owners are smarter than dog owners!

Scientists from Carroll University in America found that cat owners scored more highly on IQ tests, when compared to dog owners. Personality testing also revealed that cat owners are generally more sensitive and open-minded than canine-loving cohorts.

That’s not to bark at dog owners though, who according to tests are more energetic and outgoing. Dog owners may also make better law-abiders, with research showing they happily follow rules.

Professor Denise Guastello explained that personality differences could be due to the environments that pet owners prefer.

“It makes sense that a dog person is going to be more lively, because they’re going to want to be out there, outside, talking to people, bringing their dog”, Guastello said.

“Whereas, if you’re more introverted, and sensitive, maybe you’re more at home reading a book, and your cat doesn’t need to go outside for a walk.”

Meanwhile in other new research, a leading clinic has revealed that people can actually sleep better with pets in bed. According to the Mayo Clinic, 41% of people say having pets in bed makes them feel safe and secure.

This is especially true for people who sleep alone, who reported that having a cat or dog under the covers is both comforting and relaxing.

“Many pet owners view companion animals as family members that they wish to incorporate into as many aspects of their life as possible”, researchers explained. 

“Because humans spend considerable time sleeping, a pet owner’s desire to have animals close at night is understandable”.
