How to know when it’s time to change your life

You’re never too old to change your life.

Trust me, I’m living proof of that.

After turning 60 I sat back and looked at my life. I had been unhappy for a while – divorced, living in the country, separated from family and hating my job.

I felt trapped in the life I was in. I thought I was too old to make a change. I thought I was trapped financially, geographically. Trapped in the only life I thought I knew, the only one I could afford.

So for a few years, I suffered through. Hating every day, hating my job – and having no real excitement or plans for the future.

I was so thirsty to travel, to find love again and experience the things I felt I’d been missing out.

And then, one day, I decided it was time to make that change.

I needed to get out of that dead end town, away from the soul destroying job and live again.

I had goals I wanted to achieve, a future I wanted for myself and I certainly wasn’t doing any of that where I was.

So, I decided where I wanted to move. The city.

That was the first step. The biggest step. Making that decision to finally change!

The next step was the money side of things. I had enough holidays banked up with my job to give notice and have a healthy pay out at the end.

I also made the huge decision to sell everything I owned that I no longer needed to fund my move.

Sometimes in life we become so bogged down with possessions. Trust me, when I started selling them off I felt so much lighter and free.

That was it. Once I started the change, I took a deep breath and went for gold. In one week I quit my job, starting applying for new part-time work, sorted out all my debts, found a place to live and sold half my house of stuff.

Within three weeks of making that decision, I was out. New job, new home, new surroundings. I had a happier, healthier, less stressful life and I finally started living the life I wanted and planning for my future.

I’m getting ready to embark on a great overseas holiday, and I’ve found love again.

You might be wondering how you know if it’s time to change my life?

Simple.

When you no longer feel like getting up in the morning. When you lose sight of what you want in life and what you want your future to look like. When you go days without laughing or start to feel trapped.

That’s when it’s time to change. Don’t keep putting it off for a few years time – after all, we never know how much time we’re guaranteed!

As William Ernest Henley says in his poem Invictus, “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”

You’re the only person who can change your life. The only person who can make the decision.
