Got a messy microwave, but hate using harsh chemicals? Not only is it possible to clean a microwave without breaking a sweat, this method is also chemical free.

There is nothing worse than a splattered microwave, especially when those food splatters get left for a while so they’re stuck fast to the inside of the appliance. But a staple that’s likely already in your fridge can come to the rescue – lemon!

How? Simply squeeze the lemon juice into water and microwave the liquid on high until it’s boiling. As the liquid boils it condenses on the sides of the microwave, loosening gunk and dissolving food splatters.

If you’ve been avoiding cleaning your microwave, this all-natural method is definitely worth a try!

Measure water

First measure 1/2 cup of water into a measuring cup or bowl.

A splash of lemon

Slice a lemon in half and squeeze juice into the water along with the lemon rinds.

Zap for three minutes

Place the bowl into the microwave and zap for three minutes or until the liquid comes to a boil.

Sit for five minutes

Before opening the microwave, leave the bowl to sit for five minutes. Why? The trapped steam will help loosen gunk, making it easier to wipe away.

Clean the microwave

After five minutes, open the door and carefully remove the bowl. Wipe the inside of the microwave, starting with the ceiling and sides. If your microwave has a turntable, lift it out and wipe clean.

Scrub away stubborn spots

There is a chance you might come across some stubborn spots that won’t easily wipe away. To fix this, dip the side of a towel into the lemon-water and scrub until the spots go away.

Wipe the door

When you’re cleaning the microwave, don’t forget to wipe inside and outside of the door. Once you have, put the turntable back in.

What do you use to clean your microwave? Have you used lemon before?
