Duchess Catherine opts for demure ensemble on solemn occasion

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have joined the Prince of Wales and Theresa May to commemorate the First World War battle of Passchendaele in Belgium.

Charles led the services at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Ypres, where more than 11,000 servicemen lay, with an emotional speech to the gathered crowds which included King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium and 4,000 descendants of those who fought, while Catherine laid flowers on the graves of four fallen German soldiers. 

At the cemetery, which is the largest Commonwealth burial ground in the world, Charles spoke poignantly of the ‘courage and bravery’ of British soldiers killed in the campaign 100 years ago.

“Drawn from many nations, we come together in their resting place, cared for with such dedication by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, to commemorate their sacrifice and to promise that we will never forget.”

It was one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War, and lasted 100 days in the summer and autumn of 1917.

For the solemn occasion, Catherine wore a demure cream zip-up dress, which featured a stunning grey patterned trim around the hem and sleeves, and a peach coloured hat. With no-doubt plenty of walking to be done, she also donned her much-favoured nude stilettos.
